Planting Ideas, Growing Minds

Seedling Production

The issue of food (in)security has been critical in many parts of the world including South Africa. The right to food is enshrined in international and national law. In South Africa, food security received much attention after 1994 when South Africa became a democratic country. The right to access to sufficient food was embedded in Section 26 and 27 of the South African Constitutional law of 1996. The constitution indicates that every South African citizen has a right to sufficient food and water; and social security.

We have great news for you this year! While others debate the issue, we at Manger Care Centre (MCC) are happy to report that we have made a huge impact to redress food insecurity. In total we have assisted over 90 co-ops with training and the establishment of food gardens to sustain members, their families and the communities we serve. With funding from individuals and corporates alike we have managed to not only establish food gardens at some of these co-ops but also to develop infrastructure, drilling boreholes, fitting pumps and tanks and irrigation to boot.

We see them on a weekly basis at our community vegetable gardens, to mentor and coach them where they and their families and community members are growing vegetables to sustain themselves.

Quality seedlings are essential for good growth and performance of vegetable crops.

MCC SD & ED Seedlings is a wholesale nursery, registered with SANA specializing in the supply of quality seedlings to the commercial vegetable industry, using the seedling tray system.

MCC SD & ED Seedlings offers a huge variety of vegetable seedlings, grown according to a customer’s planting schedule. Tray options include the industry standard M200 plug, as well as the M300 and M128 plugs. For information on vegetable varieties, please contact Zen or Ryan via e-mail on: zen@mcctraining.co.za or ryan@mcctraining.co.za.

When ordering ready seedlings, the client specifies desired variety, delivery date and plants’ age.

Our facility has capacity to grow 500 000 seedlings at any given time.

We grow our seedlings in 16 seedling production units built by ourselves, 14 eco net tunnels, 1 large shade net tunnel and 5 polytunnels, situated on our smallholding in Brentwood Park in Benoni.  Logistics will never be a problem as we have a fleet of vehicles at our disposal and our extension officer will be in constant contact to anticipate your needs.  We currently service farms as far afield as Orkney, Klerksdorp, Moruleng and Bakubang – both in Rustenburg.

All our staff is SAQA accredited trained, and training is provided by our AgriSETA accredited training centre on the farm, ensuring high levels of commitment and quality outputs.  The project is registered as a nursery with SANA.

Please use the following timeframes when placing orders for seedlings. This will ensure that the seedlings are at their optimum growth levels.

A GIFT YOU CAN BE PROUD OF

It feels great knowing that when you give a Seedling Gift, you're making a lasting difference. Now, it's easier than ever before, to spread that feeling of pride and joy while helping struggling families. A Seedling Gift can help lift a family out of a life of hunger and poverty. With the training provided by MCC, families who previously did not have enough to eat will have a steady supply of food, and even be able to sell the surpluses. And with that income, they will finally be able to send their children to school, afford medicine and have a chance at a more secure future.

YOUR DONATION

·         Can be given in honour of a friend or a loved one

·         Is tax deductible

·         Families who receive your gift become donors as they pass on the gift to other families in their community. This allows them to help others as you have helped them
